Terminals in the sidebar is a workspace for SSH sessions in the browser. The SSH connection is held by the Shellius backend, not by your browser tab, so a session behaves more like tmux than like a web page: you can close the tab and come back to it.
Open a session
- Open Terminals and choose +.
- Pick a server you have access to, a recent Quick Connect, or Quick Connect… for a one-off target.
If your access to the server has ended, the tab offers Request access again instead of failing silently.
Tabs, splits and workspaces
| You want to | Do this |
|---|---|
| See two sessions side by side | Split right or Split down from a tab's menu, or drag a tab onto the edge of a pane. |
| Four at once | Drag onto the cross-axis edge of a two-pane split to make a 2×2 grid. |
| Keep a split together | Tabs merged into a split collapse into one Workspace item. Rename it with a double-click or F2. |
| Run the same connection again | Duplicate. |
| Move a session to its own window | Open in new window. |
Sessions keep running in the background
Closing a tab, reloading, or losing your network detaches the session; it does not end it. A detached session stays alive for 15 minutes by default (TERMINAL_DETACH_TTL_SECONDS), then ends with the reason detached_timeout. The sessions panel lists what is "Running in background", with Attach all.
To actually end a session, choose End session, or exit the shell.
Limits that detaching does not extend
A session still ends when the access request expires, when access is revoked, or when an administrator terminates it — attached or not. Recording continues across detach and re-attach as one recording.
When the connection drops
| What happened | What you see |
|---|---|
| Network blip or laptop sleep | "Connection lost. Reconnecting…" and an automatic re-attach, with Retry now. Output is replayed, not duplicated. |
| Shellius restarted | The tab is marked lost, with a card offering to reconnect if your access is still valid. |
| Access expired or was revoked | "Access ended" and Request access again. |
| Several tabs at once | A banner with Reconnect all. |
One backend instance
Live sessions are held in the memory of the backend process that opened them. A deployment with several backend replicas needs sticky routing on /api/terminal/*.
